Report ID: 391311 | Jan 2020 | No. of Pages: 120 |
Global Thermoplastic Starch Market is valued USD 312.4 Million in 20110 and is projected is to exhibit 17.24% CAGR during the forecast period. The market is projected to be around USD 1,102.10 Million by 2026. The market is driven by the decrease in prices of personal computers across the globe.

Thermoplastic starch is produced by mixing native starch (These are pure forms of starch obtained from sources such as corn, wheat, potato, cassava, rice, and tapioca) with a plasticizer at a temperature above the starch gelatinization temperature, typically in the 70-100 °C range. This operation weakens the hydrogen-bonds present in the native starch leading to a fully amorphous free-flowing material and the resulting material is known as destructured starch, plasticized starch, or thermoplastic starch (TPS).
Thermoplastic Starch Market Dynamics
The use of plastic is growing rapidly in various industries such as packaging, transportation, building and construction, and consumer products. As per the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), global annual plastic production grew at the rate of 5% per annum from 2000 to 2015. Plastic has a high strength-to-weight ratio and can be easily shaped; it is also highly resistant to physical and chemical degradation. In 2015, China produced approximately 2610 million tons of plastic.

The large-scale plastic consumption in different industries leads to recycling to increase efficiency and reduce the impact on the environment. According to the European Commission, approximately 167 kg of packaging waste was generated per inhabitant in European Union member states in 2015. Thus, due to the large conventional plastic waste generation, it is consequently harming the environment, which is expected to increase the demand for degradable plastic.
